A rich  young man is gambling in Paris. He wins a lot of money, but then becomes ill. He is put into a large, old-fashioned bed which has a heavy cover, like a roof, made of cloth. As he is lying there, the cover seems to come down towards him. Is he dreaming, or is he in serious danger?  A man joins a secret criminal society with unusual rules. All the members have to wear masks, and they do not know each other's names. If anyone breaks the rules, the President has them killed. The President discovers that the new member is not what he appears to be. Who is he, and  what will happen to him?
